Why we review every applicant
Access is subject to approval. Every applicant is reviewed to help ensure that our data is used responsibly.
Where the data comes from
Four kinds of source, each with its own rules about what it may be used for.
FCA
The Financial Conduct Authority publishes a register of authorised firms and individuals. We use it for regulatory status, permissions and registered-office details. It tells you what a firm is permitted to do — it does not tell you that a firm wants to hear from you.
Companies House
The UK company register gives us legal identity: company number, legal status and registered address. It is the anchor that stops two similarly named firms being treated as one.
ICO
The Information Commissioner's Office publishes the register of organisations that pay the data-protection fee. We check applicants against it, and we ask for an explanation where registration is not required.
First-party Barcadia data
Information given to Barcadia directly by individuals and organisations — for example through publication registrations, events, research and enquiries. No first-party data has been admitted to the service yet; when it is, it will be held to the transparency information given at the point of collection.
How availability is decided
These are the rules the service is built on. Some are already enforced in the platform; where a control is still being built, we say so and apply the rule by hand in the meantime.
- Provenance decides what may be relied on
- Every value records its source. A value from a public register and a value given directly to Barcadia are not interchangeable, and we do not merge them into a single unattributed figure.
- Licensing decides what may be released
- Each source carries permitted uses. Where a licence does not allow a use, the data will be withheld at export rather than released with a warning. The export controls that enforce this are being built alongside the export pipeline.
- Your approved purpose decides what you see
- Access is granted for the purpose you applied for. Change the purpose and the assessment is repeated — availability follows the approval, not the subscription.
- Personal data is treated as the exception
- Organisation-level information is the default. Personal data is only made available where the lawful basis, the transparency information and the source licence all support the intended use.
- Suppression outranks everything
- If you object, ask to be suppressed or make a privacy request, we will act on it and apply it before any data about you is released. This is handled by our team today; automated suppression enforcement is an upcoming part of the platform.
- Nothing is silently deleted
- Records that are no longer authorised are archived or suppressed, and history is preserved so that past decisions remain explainable.
